Student magazine Julkku became the first known publication to enter the edge of space on 21st of April 2012. The weather balloon carrying the magazine, a digital video camera and a GPS-tracker started its ascension in Jämsä, central Finland, and landed four and half hours later almost 200 kilometers north of the launch site in Pihtiputaa. The estimated maximum height was 30 kilometers above sea level after around four hours of ascension. The bursting of the weather balloon propelled the magazine to the nearby low earth orbit, where it will circle the earth until the nearing apocalypse at the end of this year. The camera managed to capture a bit over two hours of video material during the flight, until the battery finally lost against the freezing weather conditions of the upper atmosphere. The footage was amazing, even though witnessing the explosion of the weather balloon and the subsequent free fall would have been awesome as well. Perhaps next time!
